There’s nothing quite like a summer birthday in Jersey City. Our local parks are the ultimate party venues. However, as any parent knows, "just showing up" with a cake and 20 toddlers requires a bit of prep.
If you’re planning a summer bash, here is everything you need to know about reserving space and celebrating in our favorite local spots!
The Big Question: Do I Need a Permit?
In Jersey City, the general rule of thumb is:
Under 20–30 people: Usually, you can snag a few tables on a first-come, first-served basis for a casual hang.
30+ people or "Special Equipment": If you’re bringing in a caterer, professional entertainment, or a large group, the city officially requires a Special Event Permit through the Office of Cultural Affairs.
Timing: Apply 60 days in advance if you're going the official permit route!
1. Hamilton Park & Van Vorst Park
These are the "crown jewels" of JC. They are stunning, but they are also the most popular.
The Vibe: Classic brownstone charm with great playgrounds nearby.
Reservation Tip: These parks are managed by the city via Facilitron. While small, informal gatherings happen daily, if you want to "reserve" a specific area like the gazebo, you’ll need to coordinate with the city.
Mom Tip: Van Vorst is a bit more shaded and "garden-like," while Hamilton Park has more open paved areas that are great for setting up folding tables.
Clean Up: These parks have strict "Carry In, Carry Out" vibes. Don't overflow the park bins—bring your own heavy-duty trash bags and take them home with you!
2. Liberty State Park
The "Grandaddy" of them all. LSP is a State Park, so it has different rules than the city parks.
Reservation Tip: LSP has seven Open-Air Picnic Sites (free but require a permit for 20+ people) and two covered Pavilions (Site A & B) that require a fee (roughly $150–$250).
Rules to Live By: No balloons! They are strictly prohibited at LSP to protect the local wildlife and the Hudson River. Also, no alcohol or bounce houses.
The View: You cannot beat the Statue of Liberty backdrop for photos.
3. Morris Canal Park (Paulus Hook)
This is that gorgeous, quiet strip of green right behind the Little Horse statue in Paulus Hook.
The Vibe: Breezy, nautical, and usually less crowded than Hamilton Park.
The Catch: There isn't a traditional "playground" right inside the park, so this is better for older kids or parties where you bring your own entertainment (like a bubble performer or lawn games).
Reservation Tip: No reservation needed. Managed by the city. It’s a smaller footprint, so keep your setup "low-profile."
4. Morris Square Park & Other Neighborhood Squares
Don't overlook the smaller neighborhood spots like Morris Square Park (near the Sussex St. area).
The Vibe: Truly local and much quieter.
Perfect For: A "toddler picnic." Because these parks are smaller, a small group of kids and a few blankets feel like a private party.
Pro-Tips for a Stress-Free Park Party:
The "Check-In" Person: If you aren't paying for a reserved pavilion (like at LSP), send a "Designated Saver" (husband, grandparent, or a very nice friend) to the park at 8:00 AM to claim a cluster of tables with a tablecloth.
Weights are Key: The breeze off the Hudson is no joke. Bring "tablecloth clips" or heavy rocks/decorations to keep your napkins and plates from flying into the river.
No-Melt Menu: Skip the heavy buttercream. Think cupcakes, cookies, or even a donut tower. If you do a cake, keep it in a cooler until the very last second!
Hydration Station: Summer in JC is humid. A big dispenser of ice water with lemon is always more popular than soda.
