As a mom living in Jersey City, one of the things I’m most grateful for is how kid-friendly this city is. Between the diverse community, walkable streets, and endless parks, there’s no shortage of ways to keep little ones busy—and happy! If your child is anything like mine (full of energy and curiosity), you probably already know that a good playground is gold.
So I’ve rounded up some of our favorite playgrounds around Downtown Jersey City—places we keep going back to because they’re fun, safe, and perfect for a spontaneous afternoon adventure or a planned playdate. Whether you're a local mom like me or just visiting the area, I hope this list helps you find your next go-to spot!

Hamilton Park Playground
📍 15-minute walk from Newport Light Rail Station
This is hands down one of our favorite spots. The park has not one, not two, but three playgrounds—including a toddler-friendly area and a fun splash pad in the summer. There are tennis and basketball courts, picnic tables, and a beautiful gazebo that’s perfect for taking a break.
The neighborhood is lovely and the park is always buzzing with families. Bonus: there’s usually an ice cream truck nearby on warm days. (We never say no to a sweet treat!)

Van Vorst Park Playground:
📍 7-minute walk from both Grove Street PATH & Jersey Avenue Light Rail Station
Tucked away in the peaceful Van Vorst Park neighborhood, this playground is perfect for a slower-paced kind of day. It features a modern play structure, a sandpit, swings, and plenty of shade for relaxing or enjoying a picnic.
The park also hosts community events throughout the year—from farmers markets to Halloween celebrations. And if you're planning a birthday party, you can even reach out to reserve a space—super convenient!

Newport Green Park:
📍 10-minute walk from Newport PATH and Light Rail Stations
Okay, this one is a total hidden gem! The Newport Green Playground is creative and fun, with something for all ages—including a colorful splash pad that’s a big hit in summer.
What makes this park special is the Newport Sand Beach (yes, a mini beach in JC!) where kids can build sandcastles while parents relax with a view of the skyline. There’s also a Carousel during warmer months that’s always a hit with the littles!

Marin Green Playground:
📍 5-minute walk from Newport Light Rail Station through the Mall
Located right next to Esme Coffee Shop (a mom-win, let’s be honest), this playground feels like a little oasis. There’s a cool climbing structure with slides, swings, and even spider ropes for the brave ones.
There’s a dog run, a big lawn area, and plenty of seating—so it's just as enjoyable for parents as it is for kids. I love bringing a coffee and just soaking up the sunshine while my kiddo runs wild.

Playground at Waterfront (J.Owen Grundy Park)
📍 Right next to Exchange Place PATH and Light Rail
This one is newer and sits right on the waterfront, with incredible views of the World Trade Center and Hudson River. It’s a small but well-designed playground made with eco-friendly materials.
There are brand-new benches, space for stroller parking, and it just feels like a peaceful, modern space. It’s especially magical at sunset.

Essex Street Playground
📍 Next to Essex Street Light Rail
This sweet little park is nestled in the historic Paulus Hook neighborhood. It’s quiet and has a very local vibe—like the kind of place where everyone knows each other.
It’s geared toward toddlers, with safe equipment and a shaded picnic area that’s ideal for lunch or snacks. It’s not huge, but it’s cozy and lovely for younger kids.

Moris Square Park (Hill Park)
📍 3-minute walk from Marin Boulevard Light Rail
This playground gets its nickname from the little hill inside the park that kids love to roll down (yes, really!). It’s perfect for ages 2.5+ and has a slide, see-saw, and climbing structures.
There’s a shaded seating area for parents, and it feels tucked away enough to be calm but still connected to the heart of the city.

Angel Ramos Park (88 Warren St)
📍 6-minute walk from Grove Street PATH Station
This one’s a true hidden gem. Tucked behind buildings in downtown, Angel Ramos Park is often overlooked—but not by local families in the know!
It has two separate play areas for toddlers and preschoolers, and it encourages imaginative play with its setup. It's usually not too crowded, which is always a plus for a low-key afternoon.
