As a mom, I can tell you it's such a vibrant and diverse place, and what's even better is that there are fantastic playgrounds just waiting to be discovered all over, not just downtown. From the West Side to Bergen-Lafayette, you wouldn't believe the hidden gems of play spaces we've found. These neighborhood playgrounds are so special, each one offering a unique experience that really reflects the rich culture of its community. Come along with me, and we'll take a little trip through some of these lesser-known spots, uncovering the joy and sense of community they bring to families like ours!

Liberty State Park Playground

About a 24-minute walk from Liberty State Park Light Rail Station.

This playground is huge and absolutely packed with fun. For the little ones, there are connected climbing structures with low slides and bouncy bridges—perfect for toddlers who are just finding their footing. One of my kids’ favorites is the make-believe sailing ship, complete with two steering wheels and a lookout facing the river. It sparks endless imaginative play!

Older kids won’t get bored either. They have spiral slides, rock walls, ladders, monkey bars, balance steppers, tunnels, and so much more to explore. The playground isn’t fenced in or shaded, but don’t worry—there are plenty of shaded benches and picnic tables nearby where us parents can take a breather.

Berry Lane Park Playground

Right next to Garfield Avenue Light Rail Station.

Berry Lane Park is a total dream for families who love a mix of activities. Whether your kids are into skateboarding, tennis, football, or just running around, there’s something for everyone. The city even got a grant from the Tony Hawk Foundation to build one of the best skate parks in the country—how cool is that?

The playground itself is split for younger and older kids, and the sprinkler park is an absolute hit in the summer. Sports lovers have tons of options here too—two tennis courts, four basketball courts, a baseball field, bike and jogging paths, plus a football/soccer turf with bleachers.

And if you’re bringing the dog, there’s a dog run with a water fountain. For parents, the fitness circuit and plenty of benches and picnic tables make it a perfect place to hang out while the kids play.

Playground at Lincoln Park

This one’s a real piece of Jersey City history and one of our family favorites. Lincoln Park has everything: 21 tennis courts, three different playgrounds, a public golf course, a dog run, and lots of sports fields.

The playground has fun climbing structures, slides, and interactive play features that really engage the kids and encourage exploration. Plus, the park’s natural beauty makes it a wonderful place for family walks and outdoor time.

If you’re looking for a playground that blends history, recreation, and community, Lincoln Park is definitely worth a visit.
