Enrolling your child in school is a huge step! In Jersey City, the public school system (JCPS) offers fantastic, free Pre-K for all residents, but the process requires some planning. Here is your roadmap for the 2025-2026 school year.

1. Age Requirements & Cutoffs
Jersey City uses an October 1st cutoff. To be eligible for the 2025-2026 school year, your child must reach the following age on or before October 1, 2025:
Pre-K 3: 3 years old
Pre-K 4: 4 years old
Kindergarten: 5 years old
2. The Enrollment Timeline
Pre-K Lottery: Registration typically opens in early March. Applications submitted during this first month are entered into a lottery for high-demand sites.
General Registration: Continues throughout the spring and summer, but registering early (March/April) is best to secure a spot at your preferred location.
3. Essential Documentation
Have digital copies of these ready to upload to the registration portal:
Proof of Birth: Birth certificate or passport.
Immunization Records: Must be up-to-date.
Recent Physical Exam: Completed by a pediatrician within the last year.
Two Proofs of Residency: Utility bills, lease, or a deed (dated within 60 days).
4. How to Apply
For Pre-K: Visit the JCPS Early Childhood website. You can choose between district schools and Contracted Community Childcare Providers (private centers that partner with the city).
For Kindergarten: Use the Online Student Registration Portal. Your child will typically be assigned to their zoned neighborhood school.
Note for Non-English Speakers: If a language other than English is spoken at home, you must first visit the Multilingual Intake Center (usually located at 346 Claremont Ave) for an assessment before placement.
